State Library of NSW

Content in this community is provided by the State Library of NSW.

The State Library of NSW is one of Australia’s most significant collecting institutions, responsible for the care of six million items. A research and reference library, open to the public and funded by the NSW Government, the collections focus on documenting the heritage of Australia and Oceania. As such, the Library’s collection contains much of the historical and cultural evidence of our history as a state and a nation. The Indigenous Australian collections are one of the Library’s major strengths and encompass materials reflecting the earliest interpretation of the history, language, art and culture of the Indigenous people of Australia. These collected works document the life and activities of Australia's Indigenous people from first contact through the present day. These works were for the most part collected from third parties - colonisers, missionaries, travellers, policemen and others - who documented the lives and culture of Indigenous people. These collections are vital sources for Indigenous Australian peoples in connecting with their history, culture and language.

The contents published are for the most part posted by the Indigenous Services team, who work to share and celebrate stories of Indigenous Australia and connect with Indigenous communities.
