Some of the Awabakal language is preserved Horatio Hale’s notebook. An American ethnologist and linguist, Hale visited Australia in the 1840s and chronicled the work of two missionaries who were translating the Bible into local language. This is the first time that Hale’s notebook has left North America since they were written more than 150 years ago.
