Description: 

After arriving in Australia in 1849, William Ridley worked as classics master at the Australian College in Sydney. He was later ordained by as a Presbyterian minister, and served at Balmain, Dungog and then New England. He began to study Aboriginal languages and, while on a preaching tour of the Liverpool Plains, took a special interest in Gamilaraay (Kamilaroi). By the late 1850s he had gathered enough language material to write scripture lessons that were published as Gurre Kamilaroi, or Kamilaroi Sayings in 1855.
