These Awabakal men were painted in 1818 by Major James Wallis, the Commandant at Newcastle. Wallis seems to have been familiar with the men, who are named in the painting. While these are their English rather than Awabakal names, it was unusual for Aboriginal people to be identified at all in paintings by Europeans.
