This record of the first Russian expedition to the Antarctic includes a lithographic print of the view from Kiarabilli (Kirribilli) on the north shore of Warran (Sydney Cove). It shows Tar-ra (Dawes Point) on the southern shore at the far right.
Expedition leader Captain Bellingshausen had been given permission by Lachlan Macquarie to set up a temporary observatory on Sydney Harbour’s North Head. The expedition’s artist Pavel Mikhailov met Aboriginal people at their Kiarabilli camp and made detailed notes and drawings that included their tools, food, dress and ornamentation.
